Clinic Relocation

Sometimes the biggest changes for the better are borne out of unexpected situations and that was certainly the case for us here at SDP when, in Spring, our landlords at Melbourn Science Park set out their plans for the redevelopment of the site…starting with the demolition of Beech House, our current location! After almost 20 years at the Park, moving was not at the top of our ‘to do’ list, but move it was, so we set out to find a new location, close to Melbourn and within our budget.

If you already visit us, you’ll know what we’ve tried to create at SDP: a comfortable, reassuring and ‘at home’ environment; with plants, fresh coffee, an open and accessible reception area, original paintings and mid-century furniture. The Old Dairy at Thriplow is so well aligned to this and lends itself perfectly to creating the experience we want for everyone who comes to SDP – staff and patients alike. In a rural setting, with plenty of parking and in a beautiful village, famous for daffodils, this building was obviously going to suit our needs very well.

Preparing the Old Dairy for use as a clinic has not been a small job! Under the expert care of Anglian Dental, who design, build, equip and maintain compliant premises, we completed a comprehensive strip-out and refit from top to tail. Our photo library from week to week shows the progress from where we started and onward as it started to take shape.

We moved in on January 2nd! Even if you don’t have an appointment, you’re very welcome to come by any time for a look around and a coffee.

Our new building – before work began!

We we so lucky to find the Old Dairy, just at the right time. It's the perfect place to host our friendly, welcoming clinic where you can have a sit and a read and relax amongst plants and paintings.

Downstairs entrance hall – all stripped out

The Old Dairy was an office building for many years. To turn it into SDP meant taking everything back to bare walls. Here is what will eventually be the reception area during the first week or so of work.

First floor surgeries and lab, starting to take shape

Upstairs, we'll have two new surgeries as well as a lab (where real-life magic happens) and a second sterilisation suite. It's amazing to walk around and see the plans come to life.

Stud wall framework for ground floor treatment room

This is our new treatment room where there will be a range of new services. These will likely include osteopathy, facial aesthetics, treatment for jaw and face pain, and phlebotomy.

Our future reception area!

Reception is starting to take shape. It'll be much easier to see what it is once the desk goes in. We're making it homely and comfortable, with comfy chairs, good coffee and plenty of interesting reading material.

Stud walls in first floor surgery

Here's the wall going up in one of the first floor surgeries. It's really spacious, and has a great view over the neighbouring fields and down the road to the village church.

Ground floor towards surgery 2 and corridor to surgery 1

The plastering is done here and it's glassy-smooth. Looking forward to the decorating when it'll really start coming to life.

We have paint!

Here's the corridor downstairs with some lovely new paint on the walls. We're very keen on this soft, sage colour.

The importance of the smallest room…

We do not joke when we say how important it was to us to have nice loos. Here's the smaller of the two, with tiles chosen by our team through popular vote. Obviously, it still needs the bells and whistles, but you get the idea! :)

Attention to detail

We figured we couldn't be in such an attractive rural location without a bit of gardening. Our hand-made planters are at the front of our building and by filling them in winter, we're making sure there is interest all year round.
